PORTE-ÉTENDARD

(Version française à venir)

In 1998 I worked as a language assistant in the École Secondaire de Rivière-du-Loup. This was a formative, memorable time and 19 years later those links and friendship continue with Lucie Dumont, the founder and coordinator of this project. CHAIN OF LIFE is without doubt the most meaningful project I have had the opportunity to work on as a teacher. A pilot has taken place in our school, Aquinas Diocesan Grammar School Belfast with our first CHAIN OF LIFE Ambassadors of family discussion to embark on the project: Mary Connolly, Anna Kearney, Aoidhfionn Gegarty McCambridge, Tom McAlinden, Maeve McAllister, Shane McBrien and Sean Small.

Over the course of the year, our pupils have learnt about the facts surrounding the important issue of organ donation and of the crucial importance of the family discussion to share one’s wishes with our loved ones. They have also had the chance to learn about the excellent world class infrastructure here in Northern Ireland in the field of organ donation and transplantation and how NI is a world leader in living donor kidney transplantation, the only organ for which operations take place in NI. Mrs Monica Hackett, Acting Regional Manager, N.Ireland Organ Donation Services Team taught about the role of the specialist nurses who support the families with the loss of a loved one. Mr. Tim Brown, Consultant Transplant Surgeon, Belfast City Hospital, gave a lecture on his role as a surgeon, underlining the high calibre of teamwork involved in transplantation and the difference a transplant has on a patient’s life. Dr. Mairead Convery also gave her time to teach us about her role and the difference a transplant makes to a child’s life and development. The pupils also had the personal perspective of our colleague, Mrs. Colette Kielt who donated her kidney to her son James.

This is a universal topic which touches us all. Educating our young people is key and CHAIN OF LIFE is a celebration of life. What makes CHAIN OF LIFE unique is that it brings together values of generosity, altruism and solidarity, while at the same time celebrating the importance of one’s health and climbing mountains to celebrate that vitality. We are delighted to be a part of this wonderful initiative from Québec and to be part of the movement on the 15th October 2017. Walk with us on Divis and Black Mountain! Join CHAIN OF LIFE ! Let’s climb for life!
